The Colombian government and the delegation of the National Liberation Army (ELN) reached a consensus on resuming peace talks, Colombia's new high commissioner for peace Danilo Rueda said at a press conference in Havana, Cuba, on Friday.
The government recognizes the legitimacy of the ELN for peace talks, and the ELN agrees with the government's peace will, said Rueda, who visited the Caribbean country with an official delegation to contact ELN leaders.
"The Colombian government will take all political and legal measures within the framework of domestic and international law to provide guarantees for the resumption of negotiations with the ELN. The ELN will take the necessary steps to return to the negotiating table. Both sides reached a consensus on the need to resume the peace process," Rueda said.
The statement came days after Gustavo Petro, a former guerrilla fighter, was sworn in as Colombia's first left-wing president.
Peace talks between the government and the ELN began in 2017 during the administration of former President Juan Manuel Santos but were suspended in January 2019 after the guerrilla group launched a car bomb attack that killed over 20 people.
