Storyline

The Chinese box office this summer has reached 7.382 billion yuan (about 1.095 billion U.S. dollars) as of Saturday, already surpassing the total revenue for the last summer movie season, said the China Film Administration.

The top earners include the Chinese sci-fi comedy "Moon Man" and the movie drama "Lighting Up the Stars," which had raked in about 2.26 billion yuan and 1.69 billion yuan as of Friday, respectively.

The summer movie season spans three months until Aug. 31, and in 2021, it received a total box office revenue of 7.381 billion yuan.

To stimulate the potential of film consumption and promote the recovery of the industry, the administration recently launched preferential activities from August to October.

The main measures include accelerating the release of more new blockbusters, cooperating with a number of movie ticketing platforms to issue a total of 100 million yuan of consumption coupons, and further tapping into the potential of rural markets.

In the meantime, the Chinese government has reduced or rebated taxes for the film industry, postponed the payment of social security fees, promoted rent reductions or exemptions, provided phased discounts on electricity consumption, and offered business interruption insurance.

The administration also signed a framework cooperation agreement with China Construction Bank (CCB), one of China's largest banks, to promote movie viewing consumption. The CCB will provide 50 million yuan worth of direct subsidies on movie tickets within the year.
