Storyline

The United States had recorded more than 92.9 million confirmed COVID-19 cases nationwide, including over 1.03 million deaths as of Saturday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

Specifically, the country's case count had totaled 92,919,750, with the death toll hitting 1,037,017 as of 19:20 Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on Saturday.

Meanwhile, a total of 601,940,001 vaccine doses have been administered across the country.

The nation's top public health agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday loosened many of its recommendations for battling coronavirus, including no longer emphasizing social distancing, relaxing screenings on healthy students and employees, and dropping the recommendation for self-quarantine after coming into close contact with an infected person.

A report released Thursday by the agency explaining the guidance revisions said the more favorable circumstances allow public health officials to focus on "sustainable measures to further reduce medically significant illness as well as to minimize strain on the health care system, while reducing barriers to social, educational, and economic activity".

The guidance does not lift all precautionary measures, such as recommending people who have been exposed to but not confirmed to be infected with coronavirus to wear a mask and get tested at least five days after exposure.

People who test positive should continue to isolate immediately and stay home for five full days if positive, said the guidance.
