Storyline

The combination of China's space station lab module Mengtian and its carrier rocket Long March-5B Y4 was transferred to the launch area at the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in south China's tropical island province of Hainan on Tuesday, in a step closer to completing the construction of China's space station by the end of 2022 as scheduled.

The lab module will be sent into orbit at an appropriate time in the near future. After that, it will join its sister lab module Wentian and the core module Tianhe to form a T-shape structure of China's space station.

Scientific equipment in the Mengtian module will be used for studying microgravity and carrying out experiments in fluid physics, materials science, combustion science and fundamental physics.

Many Chinese engineers, who are quite excited about the launch mission, came to the launch site to watch the flight combination being transported.

"This is my second participation in a launch mission. Last time, I participated in the launch mission of the Wentian lab module. The launch mission of Mengtian is the final one for China's space station construction program. The docking of the Mengtian lab module with the space station will mark the completion of China's space station construction and the start of the operation stage," said Wang Qian, deputy chief designer for the overall structure of the Long March-5B.

Now it is ready for launch. After it is transferred to the launch pad, we will conduct various tests for it to contribute to the in-orbit construction of China's space station," said Meng Yao, deputy chief designer for the overall structure of Mengtian lab module.

Many young people have joined in China's space program in recent years, which has promoted the development of the aerospace industry.

"I found many new faces on the way to transferring Menttian. I've worked for nearly 20 years in this rocket family. I am very happy to see that these young people have the same excitement that I used to have when I just began my space career. I feel that the spirit of China's manned space program has been passed on generation after generation," said Lin Min, chief designer for the measurement system of Long March-5B.

A three-member crew of the Shenzhou-14 mission are currently stationed on-board the space station and will later be joined by three more astronauts in the coming months to complete the final construction of China's space station by the end of this year.
