Storyline

The CJ-6 trainer aircraft, a model that has trained generations of pilots for China, has been put on static display at Nanchang Flight Convention in east China's Jiangxi Province.

As China's first homegrown basic trainer aircraft, CJ6 took Hongdu Aviation Industry Group just 72 days for design and manufacturing.

It completed its maiden flight in 1958 and was commissioned into the Air Force of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) a few years later.

Its birth marks a milestone of China's aviation industry traversing from the stage of maintenance and imitation into the stage of self-design and manufacturing.

"The CJ-6 trainer aircraft is a starting model for China to independently train pilots. Starting from this model, Chinese pilots for military units have marched on to other models. So it is the cradle of Chinese pilots," said Wen Zhixiang, a test flight engineer of Hongdu Aviation Industry Group.

The group started to develop the third and the fourth generations of trainer aircraft in late 1990s and produced the L-15 jet trainer, which made its test flight in 2006.

As the domestic version of the L-15 trainer aircraft, the JL-10 jet trainer made the test flight in 2013.

The JL-10 trainer aircraft, codenamed as falcon, is an advanced trainer aircraft. It has aerodynamic configuration and a fly-by-wire system, which makes it strong in motility and ease to operate.

After the training reform for real combats, we added the air-to-air missile and the electronic countermeasures system, as demanded by the Air Force. So the current JL-10 trainer aircraft has an essential improvement from the original version," said Wen.

The JL-10 jet trainer can serve to facilitate the transition from aviation schools to combat units, and it has a great meaning to improving of pilots' skills, narrowing the gap between aviation schools and combat units, and raising the quality of cultivating military pilots.
