Storyline

The box office has already topped 2 billion yuan (about 290 million U.S. dollars) as of 18:00 on Monday, the second day of China's week-long Spring Festival holiday season.

Domestic films are contributing the majority of the sales, according to the China Film Administration.

The Spring Festival is usually a lucrative movie-going period in China. The once sluggish movie market is expected to make a strong recovery after the country lifted its COVID-19 restrictions.

A cluster of highly anticipated blockbusters are on offer.

China's homemade sci-fi blockbuster "The Wandering Earth II" and suspense comedy "Full River Red" opened Sunday, the Chinese Lunar New Year's Day, to greet moviegoers who had booked their tickets in advance.

"Blockbusters are released on the Lunar New Year's Day, so we must come to watch them, right? This is the Spring Festival season, and we have formed a habit to watch films in the season. This is a new custom with both festive and cultural atmosphere. It is also an entertainment activity," said Yi Feng, a moviegoer in Changsha City of central China's Hunan Province.

During the holiday which runs from Jan 21 to 27, seven films will be released in cinemas.

"The films span a variety of genres, including comedy, sci-fi and martial arts. I think they cover all age groups," said Guo Sisuo, manager of a cinema in Changsha City.

Many domestic films incorporate the theme of "feelings of home and country," which describes a sense of attachment and devotion to one's country and culture.

Films such as "The Wandering Earth 2," "Full River Red," "Ping Pong: The Triumph" and other movies released during the 2023 Spring Festival have blended national pride with blockbuster entertainment, appealing to a wide range of moviegoers.

"Love for home and country is something that exists in the blood flowing in the veins of the Chinese people. With the spirits of innovation and learning, we should try our best to polish our works to attract the audience," said Chinese director Zhang Yimou.

"The film presents a spirited bear mother, which is a little different from what we imagined. It moves the audience from the perspective of maternal love," said Lin Yongchang, director of Boonie Bears: Guardian Code, the newest installment of the domestic animated comedy franchise.

The Spring Festival is a time when millions of Chinese typically head back to their hometowns for family reunions and holiday making.
