Storyline

More than 11,000 people are now confirmed to have been killed as of Wednesday after devastating earthquakes jolted parts of Türkiye and neighboring Syria early Monday, while more countries are stepping up support as the race to rescue survivors from the rubble continues on the third day following the disaster.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during his visit to the worst-hit region on Wednesday that the death toll in Türkiye has surged to 8,574, bringing the total number of fatalities alongside the deaths in Syria to over 11,000.

According to local authorities and rescuers in both affected countries, more than 45,000 people have been injured.

Fatalities are likely to rise significantly in Türkiye given the widespread damage the quakes have inflicted across 10 provinces, with nearly 6,000 buildings flattened. Rescue teams are racing against time to locate and dig out trapped survivors from the rubble amid freezing temperatures and challenging conditions.

Türkiye's southern province of Hatay, which borders Syria and has suffered the highest loss of life in the earthquakes, is struggling with a shortage of rescue forces and a lack of equipment.

The quakes have broken pipelines and barrier defenses, seeing an intrusion of seawater pouring into Hatay, leaving many road sections flooded.

Meanwhile, plumes of black smoke were seen billowing out from Hatay's Port of Iskenderun after the earthquakes damaged facilities and containers and caused problems with the power system, triggering fires.

In Syria, the catastrophic earthquakes have caused at least 1,250 deaths and over 2,050 injuries in government-held areas, the Syrian Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the earthquakes have also killed more than 1,280 people and injured more than 2,600 people in the rebel-held northwestern areas of the country, according to rescue teams.

In the wake of the disaster, many countries have dispatched rescue teams or pledged support to the two countries as search and rescue operations continue in earnest.

A Chinese rescue team arrived in the southern Turkish city of Adana in the wee hours of Wednesday to join relief efforts.

The 82-member team, composed of personnel from the Beijing fire and rescue corps, the National Earthquake Response Support Service and the Emergency General Hospital in Beijing, brought along four rescue dogs and over 20 tons of rescue equipment and supplies, including special search and detection devices, communication tools, and medical care.

Meanwhile, a 50-member Chinese civilian rescue team also arrived in Türkiye on Wednesday to help rescue efforts.

The first batch of the Blue Sky Rescue (BSR) team, a professional non-profit search-and-rescue organization, departed from central China's Wuhan and have brought rescue dogs, rescue equipment and other necessary resources to support their work. Many of the team members have prior international rescue experience.

Meanwhile, China will provide emergency humanitarian aid worth 30 million yuan (over 4.4 million U.S. dollars) to Syria, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday.

The aid includes two million U.S. dollars-worth of assistance and urgently needed relief materials to the quake-hit country, spokesperson Mao Ning said at a regular press briefing in Beijing.

Finland will send humanitarian assistance totaling one million euros through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release on Tuesday.

The money will be used to provide food, shelter, medical supplies and psychosocial support to people who have lost their homes in the two countries following the deadly quakes.

The government of Sweden also said on Tuesday that it would send an additional 30 million Swedish kronor (2.8 million U.S. dollars) to assist the quake-hit nations.

Cambodia announced it would provide humanitarian aid of 100,000 U.S. dollars to Türkiye, the country's foreign ministry said in a press release on Wednesday.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on Tuesday also reaffirmed his country's support for Türkiye and Syria following the disaster.
