Search and rescue efforts for survivors from severely damaged buildings in Türkiye's southern province of Kahramanmaras are hastening as the crucial 72-hour mark is approaching after devastating earthquakes jolted parts of Türkiye and neighboring Syria early Monday.
Roads were destroyed, rails twisted, and numerous buildings collapsed due to the catastrophic disaster, leaving homeless people stay on the streets, crowding near a fire or wrapped in blankets to keep warm in the freezing temperature.
Rescuers continued to search for possible survivors in a furniture mall rubble and heavy machines were operating continuously to dig among the ruins as chances have become smaller to find more survivors in cold weather before the golden 72 hours are over.
Homeless survivors on the street were trying hard to contact families and relatives though cellphone signals were weak in the quake-hit areas.
At the moment, the number of fatalities from Monday's devastating earthquakes that struck Türkiye and Syria has surpassed 12,000.
