Storyline

A shortage of sufficient relief supplies and lack of shelter facilities in quake-hit Syria is forcing many displaced people to sleep out the open after the devastating earthquakes in neighboring Türkiye destroyed their homes.

A huge 7.7-magnitude quake hit Türkiye's Kahramanmaras Province in the early hours of Monday, followed by another of similar strength later that afternoon, with dozens of aftershocks continuing throughout the day.

Over 15,000 people have now been confirmed to have lost their lives in Türkiye and Syria, with many more fatalities expected as hope fades though rescuers are sparing no efforts to reach trapped residents who may still be buried under the rubble.

With scores of buildings in Syria's Aleppo heavily damaged by the disaster, many people have been left with no safe place to stay.

Despite the scale of this tragedy, key humanitarian relief materials such as tents are seriously lacking, largely due to the effects of the long-term civil war in Syria and sanctions imposed by the United States and other Western countries hindering supply channels.

A number of people have been left with no suitable shelter to spend the night, and despite the unusually cold weather, many are faced with no choice but to sleep out in the open.

A local man named Shahar was concerned about the structural integrity of his family's severely damaged home, choosing to take his wife and young children out into the safe open ground of a public park.

"Seeing the wall cracked this badly, I am scared [about it caving in], so I will continue to spend the night in the park. No matter how cold it is, rainy, snowy or even a tsunami here in Aleppo, my children and I would rather live in the park instead of being buried [under rubble]," he said.

Considering the cold weather, Shahar is also worried his children could fall sick, and so he has collected some plastic sheeting in the hope of transforming a playground ride in the park into a simple tent, hoping to at least offer some kind of basic protection against the wind and rain.

"I thought I could make a simple temporary tent, so I bought some nylon ropes and plastic sheets tied to iron columns so that there will be less of a cold wind when my children sleep," said Shahar.

Since the civil war broke out in Syria in 2011, economic sanctions imposed by the United States and its Western allies have sunk the local economy and brought hardships to many people's lives.

Despite the urgent rescue work following the deadly earthquakes, the United States has refused to lift sanctions against Syria, ignoring repeated calls from the Syrian government and the international community.
