Storyline

Some quake survivors in the southern Turkish province of Kahramanmaras, the epicenter of Monday's devastating earthquakes in Türkiye, plan to temporarily leave their badly-hit hometown to take shelters elsewhere, while others choose to stay put, waiting for news of missing loved ones trapped beneath rubble.

Wrapped in a blanket in the freezing cold, Ahmet Gazer, in his 50s, has spent two nights, with almost nothing to eat, in a tent with his nephew and neighbors as his own home in Kahramanmaras city, the provincial capital of Kahramanmaras Province, was bad damaged by the quakes.

"After the earthquakes, I sat around the fire every night to stay warm with my neighbors. We set up a tent together," he said.

Gazer, together with his nephew, has decided to go to Mersin in the southwest, a large port city with warmer weather and better living condition, arranged by the local government, though he was reluctant to leave his house where he has lived for quite a long time.

"Our life will be tougher if we stay here. We can't return home yet, so it's better to go there [Mersin]," he said.

Harun, a man who just arrived in the city on Wednesday morning from a nearby village, said the situation here is much worse than he had imagined.

"Unfortunately, when I got here, I found those who relocated from villages to the city have suffered more. Some were killed in the earthquakes and others remain trapped under the rubble. I hope they will be saved," he saidT

Güldür, another resident, is still clinging to the hope that his three family members could still be pulled alive from the rubble, which is the only reason that he chose to stay.

"We've been here day and night since the earthquakes. We've been waiting, hoping they'll be saved," he said.

Güldür and his surviving family members braved freezing temperatures in the street until 02:00 every day when rescuers finished their daily search operations, waiting for any good news of their missing family members.

"We'll stay here and wait for a result," he said.

The death toll from Monday's devastating earthquake in Türkiye and Syria has risen to 15,383, according to latest data released by authorities and rescuers.
