That's why this kind of lecture is very necessary. If an apology is necessary, then an apology must be given. I believe that this is the most basic principle."

Storyline

A Japanese professor on Sunday revealed a series of crimes committed by Unit 731, a notorious branch of the Imperial Japanese Army that conducted lethal experiments on live people from China and other countries during World War II, as it sought to develop chemical and biological weapons.

Nishiyama Katsuo, an 81-year-old emeritus professor at Shiga University of Medical Science in Japan, has spent more than 20 years collecting evidence of the crimes committed by Unit 731. As a medical worker, he came into contact with records of these crimes in the late 20th Century and has since made it his mission to uncover the truth about Japan's crimes in the 1930s and 1940s.

Through extensive investigation of historical records, Nishiyama has found irrefutable evidence of Unit 731's atrocities in China, including the development and use of biological weapons, as well as the torture and killing of soldiers and civilians captured by Japanese aggressor troops.

On Sunday, he gave a speech titled "Using Historical Records to Confirm the Truth about Unit 731" at the Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims in Nagano Prefecture, with the presence of 150 people from across Japan.

Many attendees said they were shocked and outraged to learn about the Japanese government's attempt to conceal the crimes of Unit 731. They expressed the belief that a proper understanding of history, especially among the younger generation, is necessary for a peaceful future.

"The people who come to listen to this speech are all aware of the name 'Unit 731'. However, we may not have a true understanding of what this unit actually was. That's why this kind of lecture is very necessary. If an apology is necessary, then an apology must be given. I believe that this is the most basic principle," said an attendee.

"I am very angry about the fact that there are still many historical records that have not been made public. At the same time, I am grateful to the researchers who conduct rigorous investigations and let the world know about them. Japan must never forget the inhumane atrocities it committed in China, and has an obligation to ensure that the next generation understands this," said another attendee.

Unit 731 was a covert biological and chemical warfare research and development unit of the Imperial Japanese Army that engaged in lethal human experimentation and biological weapons manufacturing in China during World War II. The unit is estimated to have killed between 200,000 and 300,000 people. It was based in the Pingfang District of Harbin, the largest city in the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo (now Northeast China, formerly named Manchuria) and had active branch offices throughout China and Southeast Asia.

Unit 731 was responsible for some of the most notorious war crimes committed by the Japanese aggressor troops. It routinely conducted tests on people who were dehumanized and internally referred to as "logs". Experiments included disease injections, controlled dehydration, biological weapons testing, hypobaric pressure chamber testing, vivisection, organ procurement, amputation, and standard weapons testing. Victims included not only kidnapped men, women (including pregnant women) and children but also babies born from the systemic rape perpetrated by the staff inside the compound.

Despite the existence of irrefutable evidence of war crimes committed by Unit 731 and other Japanese forces during World War II, Japan has witnessed a concerning trend of downplaying its aggressive history, denying war responsibility, and amending its pacifist constitution in recent years, which has also been accompanied by a significant increase in defense spending. Nishiyama has expressed strong opposition to such moves and called on the government to abide by the country's pacifist constitution and pursue a true path of peaceful development.

""I strongly oppose Japan's expansion of its military capabilities and believe that the idea of enhancing military deterrence should be abandoned. The budget for expanding military capabilities should be used in areas that are more in need. Japan should abide by the spirit of its pacifist constitution. The current approach is a violation of the constitution," said the professor.
