On the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, China stands firmly on the side of peace, human conscience and international law, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Tuesday.
China supports the United Nations and the secretary-general in playing their unique and irreplaceable role in resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, said Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, during a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
China's position is clear, said Wang.
First, there should be no reignition of the war, he said. A complete ceasefire should be achieved to avoid greater humanitarian disasters, and the detainees should be released.
Second, unhindered access of humanitarian supplies to Gaza needs to be ensured, Wang said. And third, the two-state solution should be restarted at an early date.
China calls for the convening of a more authoritative, broader-based and more effective international peace conference as soon as possible, so as to formulate a timetable and road map for a restart of the two-state solution, said Wang.
China supports the United Nations in playing a leading role in this regard, he said.
As the rotating president of the UN Security Council for November, China will hold a Security Council high-level meeting on the Palestinian-Israeli issue on Wednesday. Wang will chair the meeting.
Guterres appreciated China's constructive role in promoting a political settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli issue and alleviating the humanitarian situation during its rotating presidency of the Security Council.
Noting that a temporary ceasefire is not enough and aids to Gaza is far from adequate, Guterres said that more border crossings and simplified procedures are needed for the time being to facilitate smooth and unimpeded entry of humanitarian supplies into Gaza.
The United Nations firmly advocates the implementation of the two-state solution, the fundamental way out of the recurring Palestine-Israel conflict, said Guterres, adding that he hopes the Security Council will reach broad consensus on this.
On behalf of the Chinese government, Wang expressed condolences to the UN agencies over their victims in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Wang also met with his Brazilian counterpart, Mauro Vieira and Malaysian counterpart, Zambry Abdul Kadir on Tuesday.
