Storyline

Efforts are ongoing in an orderly manner to make sure that every injured person can receive medical care and each affected people get proper shelter, after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake jolted southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region.

The powerful 6.8-magnitude quake struck Dingri County in Xigaze City on Tuesday morning, claiming at least 126 lives, damaging 27,248 homes and affecting about 61,500 people.

Under the guidance of the National Health Commission and the National Administration of Disease Control and Prevention, Xizang's health commission has swiftly initiated a medical emergency response working in a three-tier rescue system. Currently, medical experts are providing treatment to all injured patients at a hospital in Xigaze City, with experts conducting online consultations.

"Following the principle of bring together the wounded and treating them with concentrated medical expertise and resources, we wasted no time to transfer the critically wounded patients to Xigaze People's Hospital from the People's Hospital of Dingri County after a triage process, to ensure that every injured person receives proper medical care," said Jiang Yaowen, an emergency doctor from the West China Hospital of Sichuan University.

In the severely affected Gurong Village of Dingri, soldiers, other rescuers, and social workers are racing against time to construct prefabricated houses for the affected residents. Simultaneously, efforts are underway to demolish damaged houses and clear ruins while salvaging materials.

In Senga, another village in Dingri County, the construction of prefabricated houses is also well underway. It is estimated that 190 such houses will be completed within two days.

"For the temporary resettlement of the affected people, we will remain on the frontlines and stay diligent, with a determination to carry out thorough earthquake relief operations," said Lhapa Tsering, an official from Senga Village in Chamco Township.

As of Friday afternoon, more than 1,000 prefabricated houses had been constructed in Dingri County, and over 15,000 personnel including the People's Liberation Army soldiers, police officers, and firefighters have been deployed. A total of 253 residents have been rescued in the county.

"Focusing on the three tasks of earthquake relief, resettlement of victims, and reconstruction, we are trying to ensure the affected people are properly sheltered, and resume production and a normal life at an early date," said Tashi Dondrup, the county head of Dingri.
A total of 42,000 pieces of relief materials, including tents, folding beds, and quilts allocated by the Office of the National Disaster Prevention, Reduction, and Relief Committee and the Ministry of Emergency Management, arrived in the disaster-stricken areas on Friday and are being distributed to the affected people in an orderly manner.

According to statistics released by Xizang's financial regulatory administration, as of noon on Friday, insurance companies had made advanced payments of nearly 36.2 million yuan (4.9 million U.S. dollars), including 14.16 million yuan (1.9 million U.S. dollars) for accident insurance and 20 million yuan (2.7 million U.S. dollars) for farm property insurance. Claims for the injured are being processed, with medical expenses covered in advance by the insurance companies.
