The first phase of the 138th China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) concluded in Guangzhou, capital of the southern Guangdong Province, on Sunday, marking an all-time high in overseas buyer attendance in the history of the biannual trade showcase.

As of 17:00 on Sunday, the autumn session of the fair recorded over 157,000 in-person overseas buyers during its first phase from Oct. 15 to 19, representing a 6.3 percent increase compared with the spring edition earlier this year.

The first phase featured 25,000 booths across an exhibition area of 520,000 square meters. Approximately 12,000 enterprises participated, with more than 5,500 of them being high-quality, distinctive enterprises that hold titles such as national high-tech enterprises and "little giant" enterprises. This figure represented an increase of 400 such enterprises from the previous session.

Within the exhibition halls, a range of high-tech and high-value-added products, such as precision processing machine tools, AI smart wearable devices, green energy-saving home appliances, and intelligent robots, attracted many buyers who stopped to experience them.

From the past model of processing according to provided designs, an increasing number of Chinese enterprises at this Canton Fair were showcasing original designs and comprehensive solutions, demonstrating a new trend and new momentum for China's intelligent manufacturing to transition towards higher value-added production.

Established in 1957, the Canton Fair is held twice a year. It is the longest-running of several comprehensive international trade events in China, and has been hailed as the barometer of China's foreign trade.

The second phase of the 138th Canton Fair is scheduled to run from Oct 23 to 27, while its third phase from Oct 31 to Nov 4.
