China's retail sales of consumer goods went up 4.3 percent year on year in the first 10 months of 2025, with special initiatives and trade-in programs pushing the expansion forward, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed Friday.

According to the data, the country's retail sales of consumer goods totaled over 41 trillion yuan (about 5.8 trillion U.S. dollars) during the period.

Nationwide online retail sales rose 9.6 percent to over 12 trillion yuan (about 1.8 trillion U.S. dollars), of which online sales of physical goods grew 6.3 percent to more than 10 trillion yuan (about 1.4 trillion U.S. dollars), accounting for 25.2 percent of total retail sales.

Services retail sales increased 5.3 percent during the January-October period, with the growth rate up 0.1 percentage points compared with the first three quarters, as stronger gains were seen in cultural, sports and leisure services, communications and information services, travel consulting and rental services, and transportation service.

In October alone, the total retail sales of consumer goods exceeded 4.6 trillion yuan (about 652 billion U.S. dollars), a 2.9 percent increase year on year. The data also noted that the retail sales of consumer goods in urban areas reached 4 trillion yuan (about 564 billion U.S. dollars), up 2.7 percent year on year, while it reached 627 billion yuan (about 88 billion U.S. dollars) in rural areas, up 4.1 percent.

According to officials, government-backed efforts and strong holiday tourism have been key driving forces behind the growth.

"The special initiatives to boost consumption continue to take effect, with the holiday economy driving growth in the retail of goods and services.
