Marking its fourth year of operation, the China-Laos Railway has safely handled over 62.5 million passenger trips and shipped more than 72.5 million metric tonnes of cargo, underscoring its accelerating growth and expanding role as a "golden passage," China State Railway Group said on Tuesday.
According to the railway operator, since its launch on December 3, 2021, daily passenger train services on the Chinese section have increased from an initial eight to a peak of 86, cumulatively transporting more than 51 million passenger trips, while services on the Lao section have increased from four to a peak of 18 per day, carrying a total of over 11 million passenger trips to date.
International passenger train services between Kunming City in southwest China's Yunnan Province and the Lao capital Vientiane have increased to four daily, with a cumulative total of 2,674 international passenger trips operated. More than 640,000 tourists from over 120 countries and regions have traveled on these cross-border trains, injecting new vitality into the tourism industry.
"Passenger and freight volume on the China-Laos Railway has shown a year-on-year growth trend. Monthly passenger trips have risen from 600,000 initially to a peak of over 2.2 million, while daily border crossings have increased from 300 to as high as 1,400," said Liu Qi, chief conductor of the China-Laos Railway at China Railway Kunming Group (CRKG).
In addition, the number of daily cross-border freight trains has grown from just two locomotives at the opening to a peak of 23, with cumulative cross-border cargo volume exceeding 16 million metric tonnes.
"This year, the China-Laos Railway has transported over 22.3 million metric tonnes of goods, up 26 percent year on year, maintaining a steady annual growth trend.
