Storyline

High-level discussions on ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict are progressing on dual tracks, with U.S. and Ukrainian officials holding talks in Miami over the past three days, while European leaders prepare for a meeting in London to assess the situation and a U.S.-proposed peace plan.

Representatives from the United States and Ukraine continued their meetings in Miami, Florida, on Saturday, focusing on the U.S.-proposed peace plan. Both sides agreed to advance follow-up negotiations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky participated via video link.

He described the conversation with U.S. presidential special envoy Steve Witkoff and former White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, who is also President Donald Trump's son-in-law, as "substantive and constructive".

Zelensky said that Ukraine would continue cooperating with the U.S. to achieve real peace, emphasizing that any proposals must be viable and must not omit critical issues concerning peace, security, and post-war reconstruction.

In a related development, French President Emmanuel Macron announced via social media on Saturday that he will travel to London on Monday to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Zelensky.

Their discussions will focus on evaluating the current situation in Ukraine and the ongoing negotiations within the framework of the U.S.-proposed peace plan.

Macron stressed that the Ukraine situation impacts the security of the entire European continent, adding that Europe would continue working with the United States to provide security assurances for Ukraine.

In late November, the U.S. proposed a 28-point "peace plan" for Ukraine.

Following talks in Geneva on November 23 involving the United States, Ukrainian, and European representatives, the plan underwent significant revisions.

Recently, the U.S. has held further consultations separately with Ukraine and Russia regarding the proposal.

European leaders have concurrently emphasized the necessity of their role in the peace formulation process.
