A powerful 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of the southern Philippines on Monday morning has left at least 37 people dead and more than 100 injured, with residents in affected areas describing strong tremors that forced them to flee their homes.
The earthquake, which had its epicenter near Mindanao island, triggered multiple aftershocks, one of which was recorded at magnitude 6.7. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology briefly issued a tsunami warning, reporting waves of up to 1.4 meters, but lifted it later on Monday.
In Davao City, one local resident recounted how he and his family rushed out of their house when the shaking began.
"This morning I really feel the earthquake. I was scared, and I go out from my house and get my son and daughter and also my wife. Then a cabinet also was knocked down," said Reinaldo Inso, a local resident.
Despite the initial panic that led many residents to evacuate their homes, activities in Davao City had largely returned to normal as of Monday afternoon, with streets bustling with people and vehicles running on the roads.
However, in General Santos City, which lies near the epicenter, authorities declared a state of disaster. The city's airport sustained heavy damage, with debris scattered across the terminal. Only government, military and humanitarian flights are currently permitted.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the quake caused severe damage to infrastructure, disrupted power and communications, and led to large-scale evacuations along affected coastlines, while rescue operations are ongoing.
