Storyline

Indian political experts are confident of the eighth summit of BRICS nations - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - being held in southwest India from Saturday to Sunday, saying that the summit will help the five nations come up with new methods in global governance.

Sudheendra Kulkarni, an Indian politician and columnist and head of the Observer Research Foundation, said the BRICS platform is multilateral and five nations on the platform can get together to resolve those problems the globe is now facing, especially the three issues - global economy, global governance and climate change.

"Very recently, the G20 Summit took place in China and it tried to address these very problems and some progress has been made. And it is now necessary for the BRICS platform to shed its own collective light on these problems and give a big boost to the global economy, give new ideas for global governance," he said.

Indian economists say that the economies in BRICS nations are playing a vital role in global economic growth. The summit is anticipated to focus on technology and information, as well as communication, which will in turn stimulate growth the global economy that currently remains lackluster.

"I think BRICS will set up a model how technology can be used not only for the affluent and upper-middle class but also whether poor and people who have previously in history been deprived of being part of the developed world," said Ajay Kumar, assistant secretary of the India's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

"In my opinion, China is not out of the international order, rather it is very much in the international order. It is setting in new elements into the existing international order, making it more inclusive in approach. I think that the major focus for now is terrorism, fighting against the terror factor, [which] is going to loom large in the picture of the BRICS agenda," said Amrita Jash, a doctor at Jawaharlal Nehru university.
