China's embassies in Greece and the Philippines are welcoming the Chinese Lunar New Year by hosting several cultural events, where attendees can enjoy traditional activities and performances.

The Chinese embassy in Greece hosted a series of activities in Athens on Wednesday evening, including a cultural dialogue between China and Greece at the National Theater.

Guests attending the dialogue included Chinese Ambassador to Greece Zhang Qiyue and Greek Ambassador to China Leonidas Rokanas, as well as scholars and cultural figures from both countries.

"What we want is to let the Greek people understand the development of China-Greece relations today and further realize the importance of China-Greece relations at the same time," said Zhang.

Angelos Chaniotis, professor of Ancient History and Classics at the Institute for Advanced Study, said that the Chinese New Year celebrations in Greece give people a chance to think about culture.

"If someone would have told me as a child that I would be celebrating the Chinese New Year in Athens, I would probably not believe that this would ever come true. The opportunity to celebrate the Chinese New Year gives us also an opportunity to think about the importance of culture, which is something that both the Chinese and the Greek share," said Chaniotis.

In addition to a cultural dialogue, a show called "Night of Beijing" was staged and a joint concert was held by China and Greece over the past few days.

The Chinese Embassy in Manila, capital of the Philippines, held a Spring Festival reception on Tuesday evening.

More than 700 people including Philippine government ministers, ambassadors from various countries, and representatives of the overseas Chinese community attended the event.

Several Philippine officials also wished the Chinese people a happy new year at the reception.

"Of course I wish all the best wishes to our Chinese friends," said Manila Mayor and former president of the Philippines Joseph Ejercito Estrada.

"We admire the progress of China for the past 70 years. I would like to wish the Chinese people a happy new year," said Philippine Secretary of National Defense Delfin Negrillo Lorenzana.

"We wish everybody good health and good luck in this year," said Philippine Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez.

Moreover, Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua reviewed the two countries' good relations in 2018 and pointed out that the two sides will work together to build a new golden era of China-Philippines relations in 2019, the first year after the upgrading of relations.
