"It applies autopilot at a speed of 350 kilometers per hour with passengers on board for the first time. It is also the first time worldwide autopilot technology has been used on trains traveling on the main tracks of a high-speed railway line at 350 kilometers per hour."

Running on the 108-mile railway corridor connecting Beijing and the Olympic co-host city of Zhangjiakou, the trains have been designed with the needs of journalists in mind, too.
5G live-broadcast service, adjustable seats and tables and charging outlets underneath each table together make up a mobile newsroom.

"That means we've built an information highway on the train, with the outstanding features of broad bandwidth and low latency. The special carriage for the media is equipped with a 5G Wi-Fi network, enabling media workers from around the world to work conveniently in the carriage."

To reduce resistance and energy usage, these eight-car trains also adopt a lightweight design.
According to the chief designer, they consume over 10 percent less energy, or some 1.8 million kilowatt-hours less electricity annually, than conventional units.
