Storyline

The G20 Summit is to deal with the rising anti-globalization sentiment amid weak economic recovery and the lowest rate of global trade growth in three decades.

"Globalization is nothing wrong, but we need to perfect it," said Jack Ma, founder and CEO of Alibaba during an exclusive interview with China Central Television (CCTV) ahead of the summit.

Ma is deeply concerned about the rising anti-globalization sentiment around the world.

After Brexit in the UK, the U.S. Presidential candidate Donald Trump said his country might withdraw from the World Trade Organization (WTO) if he is elected.

"People don't like globalization, not because globalization is bad. If globalization can really benefit everybody, enable every individual, enable small business, and that would be a great stuff. So we've given our proposal," said Ma, who chaired the 2016 Business 20 (B20) SME Development Taskforce.

The proposal was about launching an electronic World Trade Platform, or e-WTP. The aim is to enable small businesses to trade globally through e-commerce.

"OK, now some guys in Brazil want to sell something to Argentina, and where he can find the customers? Online. How can he transact and use money for payment, solve the payment problem? How can he solve the logistic problem? How can he solve the data problems? How can he go through customs office in an efficient way? You need a platform that can help them to enable them to do this," said Ma.

Some people call e-WTP an online version of WTO, because they share similar goals of promoting global trade and fighting protectionism, but Ma said there are differences between a platform and an organization.

"Organization is like a treaty or an agreement agreed by the government, so rules and laws. For platform, we should set up another very feasible way for small business to do it," he said.

As the e-commerce tycoon is trying to fight anti-globalization through innovation, other leading business figures are urging G20 leaders for policy changes.

"We need to reduce all these protectionism measures, rolling back the old ones, and reducing all these kinds of small, regional trading agreement, which turn out to be complicated," said Ning Gaoning, chairman of Sinochem Group.

Ning said monetary stimulus and protectionist policies have proven ineffective over the past few years. He said the global business community hopes the G20 Summit will focus on structural reforms and address the root cause.

"I believe that China has made an extremely important step in changing the course of the G20 Presidency, away from mainly financial issues and macro-economic stabilization in the promotion of growth towards a much more inclusive approach to human well-being," said Professor Dennis J. Snower, president of Kiel Institute for World Economy.

With 20 of the world's most powerful decision-makers gathering in Hangzhou on Sept. 4-5, the world is watching closely to see whether the summit will make a difference after years of weak global economy.
