Over the last three months, the number of civilian casualties has continued to increase due to opposition shelling in government-controlled parts of the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, adding to the bloodshed and misery of many Syrians who have endured more than five years of war.
Since May, opposition fighters have been firing rocket shells almost daily on government-held areas of Aleppo, as they try to wrestle control of the city from government forces.
The unrelenting shelling has killed or wounded thousands of civilians, damaged numerous houses, and left many parts of the city in utter ruins.
Abdul Kader's house was badly damaged in an opposition shell attack in April.
"It was at round 11:00 on April 28 when I saw a rocket shell strike here. Many of my neighbors were either killed or injured. We really did not know what to do. I have lost my house, and I have found nowhere else to stay. Where should I go? Where should I spend the night? We really have no idea," said Kader.
Now, as fighting intensifies, the shelling has only gotten worse, leading to more civilian deaths and injuries.
According to two local public hospitals that have treated nearly 90 percent of all the wounded in the city over the past months, and the number of the injured has shot up since the beginning of August.
"We have received more than 1,000 injured people, 30 of whom are in critical conditions with either permanent or temporary disabilities," said Dr. Zaher Hajio from the Central Hospital of Aleppo University.
Both hospitals said that the patients' injuries suggest the opposition groups have been using more deadly weapons over the past few weeks.
"Lately, we have found that the weapons used by the militant groups have been greatly upgraded, as shown by the injuries and conditions of the patients. They are very serious wounds, which means the weapons are sophisticated," said Hajio.
"The patients we have received recently are all in critical conditions. It looks like the militants have used weapons with more a powerful blast force," said Dr. Muhammad Bateekh from the Alrazy Hospital.
The doctors said that there has been a shortage of blood supplies to treat the growing number of injured.
Aleppo, located in northern Syria, has strategic importance as the country's largest city and a vital economic hub.
When opposition groups first launched their attack on the city in July 2012, it sent shock waves through government-held parts of Aleppo. The Syrian government forces, aided by Russia, are bombing the city in an attempt to win it back.
