Storyline

Officials and experts expected the G20 Hangzhou summit to promote the ratification of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The 2016 G20 summit for the first time includes the climate change issue in its action plan. China also introduces the topic of green finance into this G20 agenda for the first time, and the summit will also pass the first G20 Green Finance Synthesis Report to offer suggestions for global sustainable development.

Officials view it as China's determination to push forward the ratification of the Paris Agreement, which has been signed by 180 of 195 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) members, but ratified by only 23 by August 2016.

"Hundred and ninety-five countries that were in Paris made some major inroads in terms of addressing the problem of climate change. Now we hope that the G20 summit will be used to convince those major economies to ratify as soon as possible the Paris Agreement," said Guy Saint-Jacques, the Canadian ambassador to China.

China's efforts to promote the ratification of the treaty and to make it officially take effect are commendable, said Ma Jun, director of the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs.

"After the signing of the Paris Agreement, it is very difficult to ensure all signatories go through their own legislation processes and implement the Paris Agreement at home. In terms of dealing with global climate change, it is a great contribution of China, as the host country for the G20 summit, to push forward the legislation process of the signatories," said Ma.
