Final preparations have been made ahead of the arrival of Typhoon Megi, due to make landfall in China's southern and eastern coastal provinces of Guangdong and Fujian on Wednesday.
The wind picked up strength in the city of Fuzhou on Tuesday. Rain continued to fall, and residents piled up sandbags in front of their houses and businesses.
"I have arranged about 80 people for my restaurant, all on standby. They will work in two shifts," said Zhu Pingjun, the owner of Fuzhou Chopsticks Restaurant, which has its own generator on hand in case the power is cut off.
In the city of Putian, schools have closed, and intercity bus service has been suspended in the city.
"There are students traveling home as schools have suspended classes. We have specially arranged buses to transport them," said Huang Qi from the Putian Bus Station.
Local authorities dispatched municipal workers with large machines such as excavator, and bulldozer to dredge waterways, remove temporary dams in local rivers in prevention of flooding.
"We have prepared three excavators, two bulldozers, and 20 workers to remove the dams," said Lin Guohui, a construction site manager.
In Guangdong Province, the provincial maritime authority has ordered all fishing ships return to sheltered waters around harbor.
"I returned yesterday to avoid being caught in the typhoon. I anchored my boat at the dock," said a fisherman.
