Storyline

A woman recalled the tense moments in which she repelled three armed burglars on a mid-September night in suburban Atlanta during an exclusive interview with China Central Television on Tuesday.

Chen Fengzhu, a Chinese-American running a seafood market in Atlanta, opened fire on three burglars and killed one.

Surveillance video shows three armed men breaking into a home on 3500 Spring Drive in Gwinnett County, Georgia in the early hours of Sept. 16. Two of them were in separate rooms when Chen woke to strange noises inside the house. She grabbed her handgun and went to investigate, after encountering the three thieves she opened fire.

"I didn't have any choice so I had to take out the gun I'd hid there. Then I loaded my pistol and walked out of my bedroom. I shot at the burglars when I saw them. One of them fled quickly, and another one ran away from the front door. Then I shot again, the one inside my home also broke the glass on the back door and ran away," said Chen.

The three returned fire and attempted to flee the scene. On their way out, Chen shot one of the burglars and killed him.

"First I chose to call 911. I called on the phone while I took out the pistol. But my phone call couldn't get through. So I had to open fire on them while calling 911," said Chen.

Local police arrived at the scene after Chen's neighbor called the police.

"Police took off the burglar's clothes and attempted to resuscitate him for about 15 to 20 minutes, and then they told me they had failed to save him," said Chen.

Chen was acquitted as her action was justifiable defense, police said.

Chen's home still bears the marks of the burglary. Her family has begun to repair the bullet holes in the walls, replace the doors and fit reinforced windows to ensure another incident like this doesn't happen again.
