Storyline

Samples that are back from space along with the two Chinese astronauts on Friday have been handed over for follow-up studies at a space application center, the Chinese Academy of Sciences said Saturday.

The samples have traveled and undergone space experimentation in Tiangong-2 have returned with the Shenzhou-11 spacecraft.

"The return went smoothly. The transferral and storage of samples went well. Follow-up studies will begin after necessary treatment is complete," said Lu Congmin, deputy chief designer of space application system.

The samples include 12 space materials like metal single crystal and nano composite material. Some samples have been heat-treated in the space lab during its orbiting.

"The samples are first encased in stainless steel pipes for protection. In the pipes, the samples are then protected by quartz tubes which people can see through. Our specialists will first check with the quartz tubes on. When they are sure about them, the tubes will be taken off for sample analyses," said Pan Mingxiang, chief designer of Tiangong-2 space material experimentation.

Even much tenderer than these space materials are some advanced plants as samples. They are not only encased in black boxes and they are equipped with their private thermometers for temperature control. Seeds of thale cress, for one, have gone through second-generation seed growth in space. The experimentation is done to the satisfaction of scientists.
