Storyline

A driver from Monday morning's multiple vehicle collision in north China's Shanxi Province recalled moments before the deadly accident took place.

The accident occurred at about 09:00 on Monday on Pingyang section of the Beijing-Kuming Highway, killing at least four people and injuring 40 others.

"The fog was heavy, so I drove slowly when I exit the tunnel. I saw two vehicles horizontally blocking the road, so I stepped on the brake," said one of the drivers who didn't reveal his identity.

The driver said, the road surface had turned slippery due to foggy weather and precipitation. As a result, he took a while to bring his vehicle to a complete halt much after he had pulled his brake. But even then he didn't hit the two vehicles ahead of him.

"I had already pulled over, but the vehicles behind caught up quickly after me," he added.

Though the driver managed to avoid the initial collision, in no time he was hit by other vehicles from the back, which ultimately led to the massive pileup.

Firefighters who rushed to the scene, said there was fire in the front half of the pileup.

"When we got here, there was fire in the front part. We parked the fire engines at the rear end of the pileup and set up water hoses in the opposite lane," said Wang Ruobing, a firefighter.

Firefighters were divided into several teams to conduct search and rescue operation.

"While some of us manned the hoses, a chief officer led the rescue efforts of trapped personnel nearby. Others checked around to make sure there was no hidden fire and tried to locate other trapped," said Wang.

An official investigation into the cause of the accident is underway, the road section will remain closed in both directions until the police receive further notification from the authorities.
