"We welcome the Philippines as the ASEAN rotating presidency and the statement made. The South China Sea issue has always been one between China and some of the ASEAN member countries, but not between China and the ASEAN. China welcomes the Philippines as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) rotating presidency and China will work together with ASEAN countries to focus on development and cooperation, said a spokesman of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.

The spokesman, Lu Kang, made the statement in response to a query about China's attitude toward the Philippines remarks that the South China Sea ruling is not on the agenda of ASEAN.

"We welcome the Philippines as the ASEAN rotating presidency and the statement made. The South China Sea issue has always been one between China and some of the ASEAN member countries, but not between China and the ASEAN. China would like to continue its dedication to consultation with countries directly concerned in order to settle the issue peacefully. At the same time, China will work with ASEAN countries in safeguarding regional peace and stability," said Lu.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the ASEAN, Lu said, adding that China has always highly valued the important role of ASEAN in the regional affairs.

"We would like to enhance communications and dialog with the Philippines, support the Philippines in carrying out its duty as the ASEAN rotating presidency, work with ASEAN to focus on development and cooperation, properly handle related disputes and strive for new progress in the China-ASEAN relationship and East Asia cooperation," Lu said.
