China's total express delivery volume hit 31.28 billion pieces in 2016, topping all the other nations to rank first in the world, the State Post Bureau said on Tuesday.

The Bureau released the figure in a report on China's postal service development in 2016 on Tuesday. The report also said that each Chinese on average delivered 23 pieces by express mail service last year.

China Express Development Index hit 538.5 in 2016, up 40.8 percent year on year and the express delivery volume topped 30 billion mark for the first time to 31.28 billion pieces, up 51.4 percent year on year, according to the report.

"China Express Development Index is a comprehensive quantity evaluation of the development of China's express delivery service in a certain period of time, based on the basic features and laws of China's express delivery service. The index shows that the express delivery service keeps a momentum of sustaining high-speed development, which, on the one hand, has been driven by the traditional online-shopping, and on the other hand, is due to the increasing industrial innovations like crowdsourcing of posting services and shared third-party logistics services," said Geng Yan, director of the market supervision and research department with the State Post Bureau.

Geng said China's express delivery service's revenue reached nearly 400 billion yuan (about 58.14 billion US dollars) in 2016, up 43.5 percent year on year.

The report also said that China's total express delivery volume is expected to hit over 42.3 billion in 2017, up 35 percent year on year.

Geng said the rapid growth of China's express delivery services embodies a new round of fast economic development.

"The ever-growing inclusiveness of express delivery service is not only an important embodiment of its fundamental functions in people's livelihood but also a new engine for a new round of high-speed growth," said Geng.
