One police officer was killed and two others severely wounded in a shooting incident late on Thursday on the Champs Elysees shopping street in Paris, authorities said.
Pierre-Henry Brandet, spokesperson for the French interior ministry, told local broadcaster BFMTV that the police officers were "deliberately targeted," and the assailant was shot dead.
The Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the shooting.
According to a witness, the gunman, armed with a machine gun, got out of a car and opened fire at the police in front of a store on the street.
The gunman then began running away and wounded two other police officers before getting shot in an exchange of gunfire with the police.
The Champs Elysees was closed off shortly after the shooting, while a helicopter started patrolling the area.
Police vehicles were seen lining up the street, and people were told to move away from the area.
"I heard nothing, but the diners suddenly crammed into the kitchen. It all happened in a matter of seconds. Nobody knew what happened. I only got to know from later news reports about gun shots outside," said Dai, a chef at a nearby restaurant.
Dai said everyone at the restaurant has now calmed down after the shooting and the police allowed them to leave an hour and a half later.
The police are currently collecting statements from witnesses around the shooting scene to verify the presence of a second assailant.
Concerns over security have been raised since Tuesday when two men were detained for plotting an attack before the first round of the French presidential election, which is set for Sunday.
