Storyline

Five dinosaur egg fossils believed to be 70 million years old were discovered recently in a construction site near the city of Foshan, south China's Guangdong Province.

The eggs were discovered Monday in a construction site near a water gate of a village. The five dinosaur egg shells were engraved on a red sandstone. The fossil is 13-14 cm in diameter, with black metal line inside. Although the egg shells were damaged to varying degrees, they were filled with red sandstone inside, with veins clearly visible. The position of the fossil was about 7-8 meters deep in the ground.

Archaeologists confirmed the eggs to be 70 million years old, belonging to the phytophagous dinosaurs in the late Cretaceous period.

"We found five eggs: three were destroyed, but they are still visible. The other two have their imprints on the stone. The eggs were round in shape, belonging to phytophagous dinosaurs," said Qiu Licheng, an archeologist.

Dinosaur egg fossils used to be found in Foshan on several occasions. A nest of oval-shaped dinosaur eggs was found in Nanhai in 1980's. A number of fossils were found in Sanshui in April 2016. Experts believe that the rocks were formed through the wash by water and there might be a lake there in the past. Most of the dinosaur egg fossils discovered so far in Guangdong are of the cretaceous period. Coincidentally, the area where Foshan locates used to be a basin, one of the 108 basins in the province, where animals and plants used to proliferate.

"There are two things special about Sanshui Basin: one, it's rich in minerals, two is that it's rich in fossils, like dinosaur eggs from the cretaceous period or fish fossils from the Paleogene period. This discover is very important to our research on paleoclimate and sedimentary environment," said Foshan's chief geologist, Liu Jianxiong.

The newly discovered eggs are transported to a museum in Foshan for further study.
