Storyline

China is assisting United Nations World Food Program (UNWFP) to launch the "Healthy Kitchen" Project for Syrian refugees living at Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan.

The project plans to provide 100 meals of nutrient-rich food for each of the 12,000 students every year.

"The project provides different kinds of nutritious meals according to students' ages from elementary school to senior high school. It will help students a lot. Varied food collocations will better meet students' demand of nutrition," said Areej, a Syrian refugee, and worker for “Healthy Kitchen”.

Studying in schools at Zaatari refugee camp, students can get fresh vegetables, fruits and cakes every day, but not every child in the camp have the chance to become a "school student". There are around 52,000 school-aged children, but only around 25,000 are studying at school. A large number of children have had to drop out and work to help support their families.

"Well, from the last semester, we saw that the children are very excited to have an apple and cucumber every day. We saw that the attendance of school children was increasing when we were providing the healthy kitchen meal. And we hope to see that too, during this semester," said Amina Asfour, UNWFP Programme Policy Officer.

In addition, Syrian women in the refugee camp are also provided training and employment opportunities by "Healthy Kitchen" Project, aiming to alleviate their families’ hard condition and to enable more children to go to school.

The Chinese government has stepped up and provided three batches of emergency humanitarian aid supplies, and aided refugees through UNWFP.

"In the area, there are a lot of refugees, especially thousands of children that are having lessons here. We will pay close attention to refugees' health conditions. Chinese government and its embassy to Jordan will do their utmost to provide more necessary assistance to the schools and the refugee camp," said Pan Weifang, Chinese ambassador to Jordan.
