Storyline

The Belt and Road Initiative has brought China-New Zealand cooperation in dairy production into a new phase as China's largest dairy producer Yili has built the world's largest dairy production base in New Zealand.

The Yili Oceania Dairy Production Base built by China's Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group is located in the Canterbury Plains in South Island, New Zealand, with an investment of 3 billion yuan. It shows Yili's determination to make use of the excellent natural resources like abundant grassland, cows and low breeding cost to provide high-quality dairy products to the whole world.

"Taking the Belt and Road Initiative as an opportunity, we started to plan and arrange things. We will use resources from the whole world to serve the customers in China as well as the world as a whole," said Pan Gang, Yili Group Chairman.

High quality dairy products do not only require good milk sources, but also a production process that is highly standard. In this base, production and packaging are done by machines. Automation and thus no-operator control reduce any possible contamination.

"We only need eight people in one shift to control the entire system. This system, even compared with those of world’s first-class dairy companies, is still with the highest degree of automation," said Liu Jianan, an employee of Yili.

At present, the base produces 56,000 tons of whole milk powder, 30,000 tons of baby milk powder, and 80,000 tons of liquid milk, among others. Of the products, 40 percent will be sold in countries and regions outside China.

The base is an opportunity not only for Yili but also for local farms.

Ian Moore, 30 km away from the base, is farming more than 800 cows.

"We welcome them if you got healthy milk and we get extra pay for that, and this farm has been 5,000 dollars bonus," Ian said.

As South Island is lacking summer rain, water used to be a headache for Ian. But the cooperation of Ian has solved that. With Yili’s yearly advance payment, Ian has the money to buy irrigation facilities. In the past three years, milk production of his farm has increased by 20 percent to 25 percent.

Ian is not alone. In Waimate city, there are nearly 100 such farms.

"As you say there is development going on within the districts, we've got Hunter Downs irrigation coming on stream shortly, which will irrigate a further 25,000 hectares. So a lot of that land can be used for dairy production and other crops. So I think there's a bright future for everybody," said Craig Rowley, mayor of Waimate, New Zealand.

Besides Yili, a group of Chinese dairy companies are already cooperating in New Zealand. Some companies have cast their eyes on Australia, the United States, France and other big milk-producing countries.
