Storyline

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida on Friday on the sidelines of the UN Security Council ministerial meeting on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue in New York.

Wang Yi said that this year marks the 45th anniversary of normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan. Both sides should take this opportunity to review important common views reached by their predecessors, he added.

Regrettably, Japan has recently taken quite some negative and provocative moves on issues concerning China's core interests, which has damaged the already fragile momentum of improving bilateral ties.

He called on Japan to meet China halfway with the same goal, take concrete measures to restore trust, and push for more people-to-people exchanges.

The Chinese foreign minister also said that China welcomes Japanese representatives to attend the upcoming Belt and Road Initiative cooperation summit forum which will be held in Beijing on May 14 to 15.

Kishida said that Japan would like to work with China to continuously improve bilateral relations and properly handle and manage the differences.

Japan is willing to hold commemoration activities to mark the 45th anniversary of normalization of China-Japan diplomatic relations and raise the awareness of the two peoples to value the bilateral ties, according to Kishida.

Japan hopes to deepen high-level exchanges with China to move ahead economic cooperation, the Japanese diplomatic leader said.
