Storyline

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) convened its 30th Summit in Manila, Philippines on Saturday.

Leaders from its ten member countries will discuss the role of ASEAN as a whole in global economic, political and cultural affairs.

Mentioning that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the ASEAN establishment, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said that Philippines will work with other member countries to promote and realize inclusive economic growth within ASEAN, especially that of small- and medium-sized enterprises, while delivering a keynote speech at the opening ceremony.

Duterte said that they still need to strengthen cooperation with economic partners outside ASEAN so as to enable ASEAN to be better engaged in the world economy.

In the keynote speech, he also called for all member countries to step up efforts in building a drug-free ASEAN.

"We must also be resolute in realizing a drug-free ASEAN, the scourge of illegal drugs threatens our gains in community building. I have seen how illegal drugs have ended the hopes, dreams, future and even the lives of countries' peoples, especially the youth. Illegal drug trade apparatus is massive but it is not impregnable. With political will and cooperation, it can be dismantled, it can be destroyed before it destroys our societies," said Duterte.

With a theme of "Partnering for Change, Engaging the World", the 2017 ASEAN Summit and related meetings will run from April 26 to 29.

ASEAN includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
