Storyline

Chinese authorities on Wednesday called on businesses for more innovation in manufacturing.

Xin Guobin, vice minister of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), said at a routine press briefing that China's ability in smart manufacturing has been on the rise in the past two years since the country started the “Made in China 2025” program.

"Made in China 2025" is a ten-year plan authorized by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in 2015. It is designed to transform China from a manufacturing giant that relies on low-cost labor into a world manufacturing power.

Xin said since the implementation of the plan, China has built a group of intelligent plants and digitalized factories. The first batch of 109 pilot projects for smart manufacturing has seen their production efficiency up by an average of 38 percent, energy efficiency up by 9.5 percent and operation cost down by 21 percent. In 2016, the penetration rate of digitalized design and developing tools has reached 61.8 percent in these projects. A total of 38.2 percent of digitalized manufacture equipment has been connected to the Internet.
