Storyline

China's new manned submersible started an underwater test in a special pond in Wuxi City of eastern Jiangsu Province Sunday morning.

The submersible, capable of operating 4,500 meters underwater, is the country's second of its kind after Jiaolong.

All the core components of the new manned submersible were made in China, while some core components of Jiaolong were produced abroad.

One item of the test is that the pilots would operate mechanical arms to place four underwater markers.

"Today's test will last six hours, which is needed in a real operation at sea. Test items also simulate real underwater operations, with the pilots carrying out over four hours of relevant operations, including those involving the mechanical arms," said Ye Cong, deputy chief designer of the manned submersible.
