"Let me first make it very clear that Hong Kong is an inalienable part of the People's Republic of China. So any talk about independence has no room in this city. When you refer to the Occupy Movement, of course it emerged as a result of the discussions of Hong Kong's constitutional development. So in a cause we put in a lot of efforts to try to explain to the people of Hong Kong, and to young people that, yes, we all want one person one vote to select the chief executive. But Hong Kong is a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China, so whatever we do, (it) has to comply with the Basic Law provision."

"The two actually should not be in conflict. That's why my first task is to help people of Hong Kong to see that a closer relationship with the mainland of China actually contributes to Hong Kong's continued prosperity and stability. How we can help the Hong Kong people to better understand that this integration, especially economic integration with the mainland is helpful to our economy, actually it's quite simple, but you just look at the strong relationship between Hong Kong and the mainland, in terms of financial services and in terms of our professional services and tourism. It would be difficult to imagine how Hong Kong could continue to thrive without this growth in the mainland economy."

Storyline

There is no room in the city about independence of Hong Kong and Hong Kong people's conducts have to comply with the Basic Law, said the special administrative region's chief executive-elect Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-Ngor.

Lam made the statement in an exclusive interview with the China Global Television Network (CGTN) in Hong Kong when commenting on her expected political debate on the city's election reforms and rising sentiment for "Hong Kong independence" when she takes office on July 1.

"Let me first make it very clear that Hong Kong is an inalienable part of the People's Republic of China. So any talk about independence has no room in this city. When you refer to the Occupy Movement, of course, it emerged as a result of the discussions of Hong Kong's constitutional development. So in a cause we put in a lot of efforts to try to explain to the people of Hong Kong and to young people that, yes, we all want one person one vote to select the chief executive, but Hong Kong is a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China, so whatever we do, (it) has to comply with the Basic Law provisions," she said.

The chief executive-elect added that keeping a close relationship with the inland will greatly help Hong Kong's development.

"The two actually should not be in conflict. That's why my first task is to help people of Hong Kong see that a closer relationship with the inland actually contributes to Hong Kong's continued prosperity and stability. How can we help the Hong Kong people better understand that this integration, especially economic integration with the inland is helpful to our economy? Actually it's quite simple, but you just look at the strong relationship between Hong Kong and the inland in terms of financial services and in terms of our professional services and tourism. It is difficult to imagine how Hong Kong could continue to thrive without this growth in the inland economy," said Lam.
