Storyline

Work for draining inundated roads and repairing power lines is underway Thursday in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan province in the wake of a heavy overnight downpour.

The rain started from 18:00 and built up into a rainstorm at midnight that seriously flooded underpasses, streets, houses and inundated vehicles. The maximum precipitation was registered at 129 millimeters from 18:00-03:00.

At 05:00 in the morning, about three hours after the rainstorm stopped, water was still knee-deep at a local household where some articles of daily use were floating.

Over 400 staff with 90 sets of equipment were sent to 87 flooded sites to drain water overnight. As of 07:00 Thursday, 13 inundated road sections have resumed traffic but still 40 other flooded areas wait to be drained. 20,000 households were still cut off power supply.

Water under a 4.5-meter-tall underpass was still as deep as three meters as of 10:00. Workers are pumping water out of it. Drainage there is expected to be completed in the day as it clears up.
