Up to 00:30 Saturday, the death toll has risen to five after a building collapsed in Shanghai on Friday, according to the local government.

A total of six people were rescued and sent to hospital. But five of them died after failing to respond to medical treatment and the other one is still receiving emergency treatment.

After the accident, the local police, firefighters and medical workers all arrived at the accident site.

Large machinery and equipment and breaking-in tools were mobilized for the rescue operation. By 00:30 Saturday, the search and rescue operation was completed.

The Shanghai Municipal Government and department of work safety have set up an investigation team to investigate into the cause of the accident. The Jiading District has started handling post-accident matters.

The accident happened Friday afternoon when a multi-storey building in the Jiading District of the city collapsed in the process of demolition and fell onto a neighboring hotel.
