Storyline

A bus driver was commended in Nanchang of east China's Jiangxi Province on Friday for saving her passengers aboard before an arsonist set the bus ablaze a few days before.

Deng Hongying, the bus driver, was honored Driver of Merit by the Nanchang Public Transportation Group and received a prize of 100,000 yuan from her employer.

Deng was driving the bus with a dozen passengers aboard on Tuesday afternoon when she suddenly smelled something pungent. She stopped the bus at roadside immediately to check out.

She then identified that the smell came from the lacquer thinner carried by a male passenger, which has been listed among hazardous goods forbidden to be carried aboard public vehicles. Deng disposed the flammable liquid and continued to drive.

Yet she still sniffed the blast of pungent odor as she drove on, so she stopped the bus once again at a station, intending to check the man's other luggage.

The man refused to cooperate and quarreled with Deng.

"I demanded that he should get off the bus because I felt something wrong with his belongings. Other passengers also asked him to get off. I told him that I would not drive on if he remained aboard. I opened both front and rare doors of the bus and shut down the engine. He still refused to leave and set fire to his luggage," said Deng.

Seeing the man started to set the bus ablaze, Deng organized the other passengers to evacuate right away and she was the last to leave.

The bus was soon engulfed by fire and the arsonist died at the site.

"When I made sure that all the passengers had left the bus, I had a sense of relief and felt assured, that's it," said Deng.

The cause of the arson is still under investigation.
