Storyline

Rescuers on Friday delivered a man stranded under a cliff following a rain-triggered mud flow to safety in Zhangye of northwest China's Gansu Province.

A heavy rain from Thursday to Friday caused the mud flow and trapped the man under the cliff across a river.

Local fire department, engineering bureau, armed police forces and police officers were involved with local village officials in the rescue of the trapped man.

As the river swelled and the water flow was rapid, the rescuers were unable to reach the man on the other side of the river. Then a 130-ton crane was mobilized to help with the rescue.

It took the rescuers seven hours to bring the stranded man to safety, when he had been trapped for 30 hours.

The man is Zhao Ming, 62, a villager of Chengnan in Minle County. He came to pick mushrooms on Thursday when the rain blocked his way home. As it rained hard, he took shelter under the cliff at about 20:00 and got trapped there.

Medical workers checked Zhao when he was saved and found him in fairly stable shape. He has been sent to a hospital for further examination.
