Storyline

The world's first solar power plant in the shape of two giant pandas will be in full operation by August 10 in north China's Shanxi Province.

The Chinese solar plant is located in Datong City, and covers an area of 247 hectares with a total installed power generation capacity of 50 megawatts.

The solar cells will be of panda colors - black and white. The black patches are of single crystalline silicon solar cells while the white patches are of thin-film solar cells.

It is only the pilot phase of the whole panda solar plant project which is co-sponsored by the Photovoltaic Green Ecology Cooperative Organization and the United Nations Development Program. This exemplary project aims to push forward the use of green energy.

The project will further build two more panda-shaped solar plants with the same power generation capacity of 50 megawatts.

The photovoltaic power plant was inaugurated on November 20, 2016, and dedicated to protecting the giant panda.
