"The main skills a butler need to obtain is mostly soft skills: they need to be discrete; they need to be loyal; they need to be trustworthy. And if you combine these values within your character, then you can start learning those technical skills, such as table service, household management and certain rules of etiquette and protocol. The beginning salary of a butler in Europe will be between 2,500 to 3,000 euros a month, though it's rising depending on the responsibilities she or he has."

Storyline

Fueled by a surge in demand for European-style help, butler training has been booming in China as more and more wealthy Chinese families are increasingly seeking high-quality, full-time home-caring staff.

The International Butler Academy China in Chengdu, capital of the southwestern Sichuan Province, has seen a growing number of recruits since it opened in July 2014.

The school is owned by a group of ex-butlers from Switzerland, Belgium, the United States and Canada with the aim of providing the finest and most innovative butler service training for affluent businesses, as well as five-star hotels, resorts, private clubs, and cruise lines.

The academy offers multi-week courses which involve house management, table management, laundry management, valet skills, communication, etiquette as well as cooking.

When the student butlers graduate, the academy claims they can expect to earn at least 2,500 euros per month.

"The main skills a butler need to obtain is mostly soft skills: they need to be discrete; they need to be loyal; they need to be trustworthy. And if you combine these values within your character, then you can start learning those technical skills, such as table service, household management and certain rules of etiquette and protocol. The beginning salary of a butler in Europe will be between 2,500 to 3,000 euros a month, though it's rising depending on the responsibilities she or he has," said Florian Lange, a senior instructor at International Butler Academy China.

The student butlers, however, are required to learn much more than setting tables, polishing silver forks and crystal wine glasses, as well as ironing tablecloths.

Just as important as the practical skills is the mindset that butlers need to cultivate when working long hours for their employers, said Karen Xiao, director of training and executive head butler at the Chengdu academy.

"The butlers are not just butlers. They are not just serving things. They are going to be personal assistants; they are going to be executive managers. They play different roles in a private household," she said.
