Storyline

A yak racing event was held in Damxung County of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region on Sunday.

As a comic highlight of the annual Damxung Horse Festival, the event mainly features the cooperation between yak and the rider, stressing not the results but the joy it inspired in the spectators.

Sunday's race had 16 entires, with each yak being herded by three competitors.

Each team has one rider, with the other two driving the yak behind.

The daredevilry of the riders and the pluck displayed by the long-haired animals inspired great admiration and fun from the spectators.

As a tradition, the first- and second-place winning yaks each is awarded with a khata, a placard, as well as a small amount of prize money.

In addition to yak racing, the Damxung Horse Festival featured another most popular event -- singing contest. Participating in the contest were 16 teams and six winning teams were selected to perform on the lake-side stage. In their traditional costumes, the singers presented the indigenous numbers with their natural voices.

The week-long Damxung Horse Festival was originally created for Tibetans to celebrate good harvest and exchange farm produce and animal husbandry products. With the time going on, Tibetans added such entertainment and recreational activities to the program as trade, investment, theatrical performances and traditional sports. It has now become part of China's national intangible cultural heritage,
