Storyline

More shelters are needed for people affected by the devastating mudslide in Freetown, capital of Sierra Leone, on Monday, which killed at least 400 people with about 600 people still missing.

The local government has set up six temporary settlements for people affected. At a settlement in a school, about one kilometer away from the disaster site, people were queuing for food and water, most of them women and children.

According to Tanna Varley, head of the settlement, they receive relief supplies every day after the disaster.

"We have a lot of materials. There are some of the products people are donating. We have plenty who are donating and we have private individuals," said Eric, staff at the settlement.

"The Chinese medical group came here yesterday. They gave us medicines," he added.

Although many organizations sent food and daily necessities to them, the biggest problem for them is to solve accommodation, said Varley. Many people were seen sitting in tents of the settlement, as there is no enough room for them to lie down to sleep.

"We don't have place to sleep, because it's a school. We are just staying here temporarily. School will open very soon. And we also should go to find another place. We don't have many places to live for now," said Eric.

"The big problem now [is] we need more accommodation, and we need blankets. We need mattresses. We need more support and food for these kids. This accommodation is not enough. No, we cannot allow our people to go down in the worst parts again," said Varyley.

"The government has already abandoned the place where we lived before, and no one will stay there," she added.

According to Varley, due to limited room at the settlement, many people are intended to return home to build temporary shelters, but staff at the settlement are trying to stop them, because the Sierra Leonean government has urged residents to evacuate from there as a hill with crevice is likely to collapse.

Forecasters are warning of more rain in next few days in the area, which will bring more problems to local people.
