Storyline

People living in Brazil's Amazon rainforest can now have more amusements thanks to the volunteers who have put themselves out to show films for local villagers.

Amazon rainforest is home to native Indians. The area is underdeveloped due to inconvenience in transportation and poor infrastructure, so watching movie had been a luxury until recent years when a retired Italian reporter started a public service to provide an open-air cinema for the locals.

Olivieiro used to be an Italian reporter in Brazil for nearly 30 years. After his retirement, he organized a team of volunteers to reach those villages in the Amazon rainforest with film projectors via a boat.

"Some of the villages we are going to visit have only three hours of power supply per day. The villagers there need not only flour and fish, but nourishment for mind and joy as well," said Olivieiro.

Starting from 2011, Olivieiro and his team have persisted in providing open-air cinema for villagers in the Amazon rainforest once a year.

"I've brought a large-size screen, projector and stereo equipment with excellent sound effect. I want to create an atmosphere like the cinema. People would like it," said Olivieiro.

Local villagers gathered early at an open square in the Jamaregua Village, the first stop in Olivieiro's tour, waiting to watch a movie. Some students in nearby villages even took a special bus tour for the movie.

"Going to a cinema is a luxury for students, because it is only available in shopping malls of big cities," said a teacher.

"I'm very excited. It will be amazing," said a student.

According to Olivieiro, they would continue to travel nearly 1,000 kilometers along the Amazon River for villagers to enjoy the open-air cinema.
