Storyline

The China Railway Express has operated 5,000 trips to Europe as the latest one left Zhengzhou City, central China's Henan Province, on Wednesday afternoon, marking a great stride in the connectivity between China and the rest of Eurasia.

Launched in March 2011, the China Railway Express has been running on the international railways connecting China with Central Asia and Europe, forming an important channel of transportation along the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road.

Up to the present, the China Railways has laid 52 service lines for the China Rail Express, passing through 32 Chinese cities and reaching 32 cities in 12 European countries, increasing by 152 percent annually. The return trip has been increasing by an annual 352 percent since 2014. The number of trains operated so far this year has reached 1,800, with the return trips accounting for 50 percent of the outbound trips.

The cheap and fast rail service is indispensable to the great market demand, as cheap sea transport is time-consuming and fast air transport is quite expensive.

"So after the launch of the China Railway Express to Europe, we have provided a third option for clients who need fast transport and are sensitive to price. The market is huge," said Fang Xudong from the Yiwu-Madrid line of the China Railway Express to Europe.

With the support of the Belt and Road Initiative, the Chinese Railways has seized the opportunity to create the China Railway Express to Europe and it went on to negotiate transport charges with relevant countries.

"Generally, the current price has dropped by 30 percent as compared with that at the beginning. A train can reach Europe in as short as 10 days, instead of the previous 15 days," said Zhong Cheng, deputy general manager of the China Railway Container Transport Company.

Thanks to the sustained drop in the transport charges, there has been an explosive growth in the number of train services, with the density of trains in operation creasing steadily and most lines realizing normal operations.

"It took us 55 months to increase from first train to the first 1,000th train, eight months and a half to increase to the second 1,000th train, five and a half months to reach the third 1,000th train and four months and a half to increase to the fourth 1,000th train," said Zhong.
