"The Group of 77 and China moved this resolution which was adopted by a big majority by the General Assembly. And by this resolution the principles that have been endorsed are found also in China's 'One Belt, One Road' initiative. We have seen many countries -- both from the developing world and the developed world -- both endorsing many of the principles that are also found in China's 'One Belt, One Road' initiative. So this is also a win-win for all countries. So we are very happy and pleased that this resolution was adopted."

"The resolutions of the UN General Assembly are an important part of norm building at the UN and at the international level. The resolution of this kind helps to build international solidarity. 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Maleeha Lodhi, permanent representative of Pakistan to United Nations (with reporter asking question):
(Reporter:"How do you think about China's role in the performance of global economic governance?")
"I think China has a leading role to play in the evolution of global economic governance for the future, not only because China is a very important global economic power, but also because China brings to the table its experience of South-South cooperation, of working with other countries -- developing countries to help them develop and prosper, especially at a time when we see other economies in the world going through either troubles, or they are in transition, they are trying to address their own challenges."

Storyline

The resolution on global economic governance passed at the closing meeting of the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly on Monday reflects China's Belt and Road Initiative, said Maleeha Lodhi, Pakistan's permanent representative to the UN, on Tuesday.

Lodhi made the remarks in an interview with China Central Television (CCTV) in New York City.

The resolution, titled "The United Nations in Global Economic Governance" reiterates the need for inclusive, transparent and effective multilateral approaches to managing global challenges. It stresses the central role of the UN system in efforts to find common solutions.

So we are very happy and pleased that this resolution was adopted," said Lodhi.

Lodhi said the UN is the most representative and authoritative inter-governmental organization. The General Assembly is the most universal decision-making body of the UN and the resolution adopted by the Assembly helps guide efforts in strengthening global governance.

"The resolutions of the UN General Assembly are an important part of norm building at the UN and at the international level. The resolution of this kind helps to build international solidarity. It helps to bring nations together and it also endorses principles which will guide global economic governance for the future," she said.

Lodhi spoke highly of China's role in global economic governance.

"I think China has a leading role to play in the evolution of global economic governance for the future, not only because China is a very important global economic power, but also because China brings to the table its experience of South-South cooperation, of working with other countries -- developing countries to help them develop and prosper, especially at a time when we see other economies in the world going through either troubles, or they are in transition, they are trying to address their own challenges," said Lodhi.
